One · Half past six in the Sagano bamboo
Get ahead of the crowds and walk into the Sagano grove at first light. The culms cross overhead and filter the morning into a soft green haze. Every so often a shishi-odoshi — the bamboo water-tipper — knocks once somewhere down the valley, and which century you are standing in becomes briefly negotiable.

The light in the ice-cave set is extraordinary — especially the warm-to-cool separation at 14mm and f/2.8. Is the Crystal Cave better first thing in the morning, or around midday?
